Proper breathe control is essential to remaining calm during stressful situations. Aikido breathing exercises help students learn to remain calm by controlling their breathing. What is the proper posture? It’s important to maintain the proper posture during breathing exercises, so that your lungs can completely fill with air during the exercise. The proper sitting posture is one of the following: a. Tailor fashion Sit on the floor with your knees bent parallel to the floor Feet are tucked in between your thighs, with one ankle over the other Your head should be upright, with your chin parallel to the floor Sit upright with a your spine straight. Place your hands loosely on your knees Your body should be relaxed Check your shoulders if they are tense or raised, then you are tense: conciously relax your shoulders b. Scientific Self Defense – Book Review

In 1931 D. Appleton and Company published Colonel W.E. Fairbairn’s book, Scientific Self Defense, which presents the Fairbairn fighting system known as Defendu.  Colonel Fairbairn developed his fighting system through a scientific study of most of the methods of self defense. Colonel Fairbairn’s Background Colonel Fairbairn earned a second degree black belt from Kodokan Jui-Jitsu University in Tokyo, Japan.  He was the first foreigner living outside of Japan to do so. He also studied Chinese “boxing” with TsainChing Tung, who instructed the retainers to the Chinese Dowager Empress. Twenty-three years with the Shanghai Police Force gave W.E. Fairbairn experience in handling violent confrontations. His traing in Jui-Jitsu and Chinese boxing stood him in good stead because in the early 1900’s Shanghai was a lawless, violent international port. He was an Inspector with the Shanghai Municipal Police Force and was responsible for apprehending pirates, drug dealers, and other violent criminals. Fairbairn became the Instructor in Self-Defense to the Shanhai Muncipal Police Force. He also trained members of royalty and several high ranking Jui-Jitsu experts in Japan. Self Defense – Pay Attention To Your Environment

It’s important to pay attention to your environment when walking in public. Victims of “stranger” assaults are usually targeted by their assailants because of behaviors that indicate the victim is not paying attention. Instead, the victims are “mentally elsewhere.” Fortunately, there are some simple habits that people can develop to reduce their odds of being targeted by assailants. Safety involves focusing on the activities taking place around you. Below are some ideas that will you develop safe habits for walking in public. Watch your surroundings Use windows to see behind you – Windows are wonderful things. They reflect images. As you are walking along, glance at the windows in the buildings and cars to the side of you. Learn to use the reflections to check behind and see who is following behind you. If you see someone who makes you uneasy, or is focused on you; then walk into a shop, restaurant, or other public place. Glance behind you and see if the person has followed you into the building. Practice Martial Arts At Home

The Masters that I studied with agreed that their students who practiced their martial arts skills at home, as well as in class, progressed faster than the students who only practiced while in class. Students who practice martial arts at home develop muscle memory through repetition of movement. Grand Master Jerry Warren (Shorin Ryu, Judo, and Kuan-Tao) routinely instructed us to practice each kata at least 10 times per day, outside of class. Master Rod Kobayashi (Aikido) encouraged us to practice our wrist stretching exercises continuously throughout the day. Master Peter Deeley (Shorin Ryu, Fencing, Judo, and Unarmed Combat) consistently practices his martial arts skills at home several times a week. The extra hours of practice make a significant difference in mastery of skills and developing basic skills that enhance in-class lessons. Why practice at home? Classes are very important and should never be missed, except for exigent circumstances. The skills and knowledge taught in class are invaluable. Students should also practice at home those skills learned in class because the limitations on class hours doesn’t normally allow students enough repetition to convert skills into muscle memory: only enormous amounts of time can do that. Welcome! I’m very glad to meet you. WHY I STARTED TRAINING In the fall of 1974, I began studying at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) as a freshman. I was small, tiny and very vulnerable. That fall, a man began attacking women on campus and if I was attacked, I would be “toast.” So I began looking for a skill set to increase my chances of successfully defending myself if I were attacked. While walking across campus, I noticed a poster advertising an Aikido demonstration. I’d never heard of Aikido; but the poster looked interesting. I attended the demonstration and was impressed by the black belt, who was successfully defending himself from a much larger person. I thought, “If he can do it; so can I.” Aikido was explained as a “non-violent art of self-defense. This was a perfect fit: I signed up for the class. As I began practicing I discovered that I very much enjoyed the training. It was the beginning of a life-long love for self-defense training.
